A few weeks ago, I got an email that said, 'Why did my doctor prescribe statins right away the moment they realize my cholesterol is high?'
There’s a reason why doctors go straight to medication instead of opting for natural solutions first.
Let’s dig into this.
If nutrition is the key to most of our health problems... why aren't medical institutions caring about nutrition?
Take a look at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the big kahuna of medical research. With 27 institutes and centers under its belt, you'd think one of them would give nutrition the time of day. But nope, not a single one! And to add insult to injury, they're tossing a measly 4% of their budget towards nutrition research. Talk about a slap in the face.
I know of one doctor that has been in the trenches with these NIH big shots, trying to get them to see the light. But it's like talking to a brick wall. I mean, seriously? These are the folks supposed to be leading the charge in medical research, and they're clueless about the basics of food?
It's time we give nutrition the respect it deserves. It's not just some side dish—it's the main course, the bread and "butter" of our health. It even has huge effects on mental health as well.
For example... did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death? And... did you know that the majority is preventable? And... how can it be prevented? Well... with the food we eat.
This is why I get so upset with medical institutions. They should be leading the way on disease prevention through nutrition. They should be educating us and busting the myths that have been created because of conflicting misinformation.
But you know what? This is why you're here. You have found your tribe to take control away from these institutions and put it in your hands. Enough is enough.
Did you know doctors don't get ANY training on how nutrition can prevent or treat diseases?
On average, doctors get 21 hours of training in nutrition BUT it's only about the science stuff—how your body breaks down food and all that jazz.
They never learn about which foods prevent and reverse diseases, and which foods cause the diseases that are literally killing us in masses.
Let that sink in. Isn't it jaw dropping?
I was scrolling through facebook and I saw this post that reminded me of all this. The post said:
"What am I doing wrong? Something just doesn’t add up. I went to my Doctor in July of 2023 for a routine check-up, which included blood work. Numbers went up slightly from the previous check-up, but not by much. My Doctor immediately wanted to put me on cholesterol medications, but that’s something I didn’t want to do (I’ve heard there are too many side effects). He agreed to hold off, but said I would need to take measures on my own to bring my levels down."
I'm glad the doctor didn't give advice since he doesn't know much about nutrition, but it sucks. I feel like the only thing we can count on from the medical community is to be given pills.
Since 1958 only around 25% of medical schools require a nutrition course (and it's not even about disease prevention or treatment through nutrition).
Despite repeated calls from medical authorities for increased focus on nutrition, little has changed over the past 50 years. This lack of emphasis on nutrition is concerning, especially considering the high prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases among patients.
This is why WE need to take matters into our own hands.
For me... easy does it. I'm a working mom and I don't have time for much. My goal is to make delicious food while spending as little time as possible in the kitchen.
