Blog/What To Eat/Amla Powder for Cholesterol: Natural Benefits and Uses

When our doctor tells us that if we don’t lower our cholesterol, they’re going to put us on a statin, our first thought is often: which supplement can I start taking now to lower cholesterol before my next visit?

Well, I have GREAT news for you today. There is a natural supplement that’s proven to lower cholesterol just as effectively as a statin.

What You're About To Discover:

  • What is Amla?
  • How I take it
  • Where I get it

What is Amla?

So, what is Amla powder? Amla is a fruit also known as Indian Gooseberries. It’s the most antioxidant-rich fruit in the world, with a hundred times more antioxidants than blueberries! To make Amla powder, the whole fruit is simply pulverized. This is why I actually call it a no-supplement.

Amla is often referred to as a magical herb and has been used medicinally for thousands of years.

There are many studies showing the power of AMLA for people dealing with cancer, diabetes, and more. Today, let’s focus on how Amla can help those of us with high cholesterol.

But first, let’s get one thing clear: Amla won’t cure your high cholesterol. The same goes for statins. Statins don’t cure high cholesterol. In fact, it’s rare for people to stop taking statins because it requires an evidence-based lifestyle change.

However, if you adopt a healthier lifestyle based on the evidence we discuss on Thursdays, you would be able to avoid statins or even get your doctor’s approval to stop taking them.

Now, let’s dive into it. How does AMLA affect cholesterol levels?

This study shows that AMLA performed a bit better than simvastatin (a popular cholesterol-lowering drug), with about a 15% drop in total and LDL cholesterol. Check out figure 3 in the link – you’ll see that Amla did a better job at lowering LDL. And they were using a TINY dose of less than 1/8th of a teaspoon of Amla juice. Another study showed AMLA had the same results when compared with Lipitor (atorvastatin).

This study not only shows that AMLA improves cholesterol, but it also enhances artery function and drastically reduces inflammation. The study's conclusion? Amla extract may be a great therapeutic alternative to statins.

And what about AMLA powder? This study found that participants who used ½ a teaspoon of AMLA powder daily dropped their total cholesterol by 35% to 40% in just 3 weeks! That’s typically the kind of result you might see after six months on statins! And their LDL levels? They were down to optimal levels after just 21 days.

Here's a video of Dr. Greger discussing AMLA powder. Skip to 2:08 to hear him talk about these specific results.

VERY IMPORTANT: If you’re currently taking statins, please don’t stop taking them without getting your doctor’s approval. Statins are helping you reduce the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke. Let your doctor know that you’re trying natural solutions and ask them when it would make sense to check your levels again.

How I Take It

I take Amla powder in three different ways, depending on my mood:

  • Easiest: Add ½ teaspoon to 2 ounces of water, mix, and drink (this is how I take it 99.9% of the time because it's super easy).
  • Easy: Just like above, but add the juice of ½ a lemon.
  • More time consuming: Add it to a smoothie.

My recommendation? Keep it simple. Easy always does it.

Where I get It

You can get it as a powder. That bag lasts an entire year, giving you all the benefits for pennies a day.

If you prefer tablets, this is a great option too.

Choose whichever form will help you stay consistent. That’s what really matters.
