How fast can I lower cholesterol with a whole-plant-based diet?

Last week, we discussed that in areas where heart disease is practically nonexistent, people consistently have total cholesterol well below 150. They eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet.

This means they naturally avoid fats and dietary cholesterol without even thinking about it. Specifically:

  • They don’t eat animal products (the one and only source of dietary cholesterol).
  • They don’t consume added fats (oil, butter, etc.).
  • They don’t eat added sugars.

So, how fast does this diet lower LDL and total cholesterol? I have great news for you: this diet can give you fast and dramatic results.

The changes are so significant that, in just two weeks, I’ve seen people lower their LDL by 60 points, and others have lowered their cholesterol by over 100 points in less than 30 days.

Specific examples of success stories

Let’s start with Dr. Esselstyn himself. He’s the cardiologist who has saved thousands of people after they were told by their physicians that nothing more could be done for their heart disease. Before working with patients and conducting formal studies, he tested his theories on himself. In just two months, he went from a total cholesterol of 185 to 155. Once he eliminated all oil and dairy, his cholesterol dropped to 119 mg/dL without any medication. And no, low cholesterol is NOT dangerous—it actually makes you immune to heart attacks. Dr. Esselstyn has confirmed this over and over.

Another example is my friend Sean. He had tried Keto, Paleo, and other low-carb diets to lower cholesterol, but to his surprise, his cholesterol kept going up. My mom is another great example. She had been trying for over 40 years to lower her cholesterol. There were times when her total cholesterol shot up to over 300. When she followed this diet, her cholesterol dropped to the normal range in less than 30 days. Now, she can continue on this path to lower her cholesterol below 150 and reach immunity.

The last example I’ll share is a powerful one. Her name is Gloria, and she was struggling with tachycardia. She was taking medication for her heart and high blood pressure. She said, “Because my health improved so drastically, my doctor was able to stop prescribing heart medication and cut my blood pressure medication in half! I also lost 19 pounds very quickly in the process.” Her insomnia and gastritis also went away.

That’s how powerful nutrition is.

Does this diet help with other chronic diseases?

If you’re currently taking medication for other diseases like diabetes, it’s extremely important that you consult with your doctor because of how quickly this diet can improve your health. When that happens, medication needs to be adjusted—or it could be dangerous.
