If you're like me, it comes as a shock to hear that coffee might be bad for cholesterol, especially after sacrificing so many things you love for the sake of health.
I saw a post from someone stating, 'Please don't tell me I have to give up coffee. It's the only thing I have left.' This statement is powerful and reflects a sentiment many people feel deeply.
Let's get the answers.
So... does it? Does coffee really increase cholesterol? Unfortunately... yes 😭
This study shows that coffee beans do increase cholesterol. As written in the study: "The responsible factors are the diterpene lipids cafestol and kahweol..."
I have good news... kinda.
There's a way you can make coffee that eliminates most of the fatty compounds responsible for increasing cholesterol.
This study shows that, by simply using a paper filter, you will eliminate 95% of the fatty compounds that increase cholesterol.
Why? Because these compounds are in the coffee grounds. When you use a paper filter you keep the grounds completely away from the coffee.
If you use a french press, you'll see grounds at the bottom, which means the cholesterol made it through.
And, unfortunately, a metal mesh filter doesn't work to keep cholesterol away. Only a paper filter does. I know 🙁
Considering the significant reduction in cholesterol-raising compounds using a paper filter, it's comforting to know we can still enjoy coffee in a healthier way.
However, considering coffee's other negative effects, such as inflammation and impairment of artery function, I personally lean towards tea as a healthier alternative.
Once your cholesterol levels are regulated, enjoying a cup of paper-filtered coffee as an occasional treat could be a great compromise.
Have you discovered any great coffee alternatives? I’d love to hear about them!
