One of the most common questions I receive is: How do I know if the food I eat is increasing my cholesterol?
Let's explore a very simple hack to get the answer to this burning question.
When I was trying to measure the impact of food on my weight (and health), I started experimenting with different apps.
The best free app I found is called "Nutritionix Track." You can find it in the Apple Store, and it looks like this:

Once it loads, it will take you to "today" so you can start logging right away. I love it because I can enter any ingredient I want by typing it or scanning its bar code. Here’s what the app looks like when opened:

See the green plus sign? I click on it to add ingredients (or a saved recipe). Let’s say I eat egg tacos for breakfast. Here’s what that would look like:

See the gray circle? If you click on it, you’ll be able to see if your meal will increase cholesterol. If your meal contains more than 0mg of cholesterol, then it means it WILL increase your levels. The only way a meal won’t increase your cholesterol is if it has 0mg. So, will these egg tacos increase my cholesterol? Let's see:

These tacos definitely raise cholesterol.
Another reason why I love this app is that you can search almost any restaurant.
Here’s how to do it:
If a meal has any ingredient that comes from an animal, it will increase your cholesterol. The only other ingredients I know of so far that will also affect your cholesterol are coffee (if you don’t use a paper filter) and coconut oil.
